NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming and is a collection of techniques that have emerged from the field of psychology. These techniques have been widely adopted by business and education to better understand learning styles, aid motivation and improve communication skills. Increasingly NLP is being recognised in the wider world as a powerful set of ‘tools’ for personal development.
NLP - Neuro-Linguistic Programming
- 'Neuro' relates to our nervous system and the way in which we experience and interpret our world through it
- 'Linguistic' refers to how the language we use influences our internal dialogue and our communication with others
- 'Programming' relates to our ability to change negative habits and limiting beliefs and replace them with more productive behaviour and nurturing beliefs
NLP can prove effective in:
- Dealing with anxiety, stress or depression
- Increasing confidence, assertiveness and self-image
- Achieving and maintaining desired weight
- Improving relationships
- Improving work performance
- Achieving work-life balance
- Overcoming back to work issues
- Eliminating self-limiting beliefs and negative emotions
- Overcoming phobias
- Stopping smoking
- Enhancing sports performance
- Achieving personal and business goals
- Improving learning and exam performance
NLP recognises that each person has a ‘state’ of being which is made up of two elements:
- Our physical state – our posture, facial expression, movements, vocal tone etc
- Our internal state or our ‘internal representation’ - this encompasses how we perceive and what we believe about the things we experience. This also includes our beliefs about our own abilities, the type of person we are and what we can or can’t do.
The principle of NLP is that if you can change someone’s ‘state’ then the behaviour, emotions and actions that result from it can also be changed.
How does it work?
An NLP session starts by identifying your current ‘state’, including the thoughts, feelings and actions you would like to change. Then a desired outcome is identified – a new ‘state’. Different NLP techniques can then be applied to make the change from the old ‘state’ to the new one.
What to expect at a session
To ensure that you get the most out of a session I provide a safe and friendly environment where you can relax, safe in the knowledge that everything we discuss will be treated with total confidentiality. The comfortable atmosphere will help give you the confidence to fully articulate the issues you want to address and express the emotions that surround them.
Initial sessions usually last from two to two and a half hours. Unlike conventional counselling NLP can progress very quickly, often reaching a successful conclusion within a few sessions or sometimes even one.
Charges: £45 per hour
