Hypnotherapy has long been recognised by both the British and American Medical Associations as highly effective in a wide range of therapeutic areas and has been the subject of exhaustive clinical studies.
Hypnosis is in fact a naturally occurring state of mind and anyone can be hypnotised if they are willing to follow instruction. The person being hypnotised is always in control of the situation. They remain aware of what is going on and remember everything that has happened when they emerge from hypnosis.
Far from being something mysterious, hypnosis can be characterised as a state of highly focused attention.
Whenever you give something your complete attention you might be described as having entered a state of light hypnosis, for instance when you watch a film and completely forget what else is going on around you or when driving your car and you can't remember parts of the journey.
You cannot be made to do anything against your will while under hypnosis and you will feel relaxed, comfortable and pleasantly light headed. This feeling can last for a few days and you may notice a feeling of greater ease both at work and socially.
How does Hypnotherapy work?
Hypnosis works by connecting with our subconscious minds. During hypnosis, the conscious mind (associated with the left hand side of the brain) the part we use during our waking day is turned off and the subconscious mind (associated with the right hand side of the brain) is activated. The subconscious mind controls our habits, emotions and feelings. If we can access this and re programme it with new suggestions and ideas we can bring about the desired changes.
What to Expect at a Session
I always use hypnotherapy in conjunction with NLP and in the first instance, I will spend about an hour and half or longer obtaining a full understanding of how the situation impacts on your life and what it is you want to change.
If hypnotherapy is right for you, I will then explain about hypnosis and what it can and can't do. Once you are seated comfortably and happy with what will happen, I will begin the induction and guide you into a gentle hypnotic trance. All you have to do is relax and focus on your breathing. A trance state is where you would have your eyes closed, are very relaxed, have a quiet mind and are aware of what is going but you can awaken at any time and able to reject any suggestion. Once you have reached the level of trance that's right for you, I will begin the process of helping you to make the changes you want, the exact content depends on what you are wanting to achieve.
At the end of the session I will guide you out of trance again. You will come out of trance feeling refreshed and alert. Most people feel as if they have just wakened from a nap, and feel really relaxed.
Most people find the whole experience very enjoyable.
